Maureen Squires
FEATURED ARTIST May 2025
Art Gallery 71 invites you to
Copper and Blues
a show by artist Maureen Squires
May 9 - June 1
Reception: Saturday, May 17, 4-6pm
“The concept for this show derived from the question, What would happen if I limited the palette to blues and copper/metallic tones? The results are raw landscapes that prompt another question: Where is this? The answers have been varied - they depend on personal experiences that draw the viewers into places that evoke memories.
I explored a parallel theme as another question arose for me around the growing presence of AI in everything we do and see. Can I make work that AI can’t easily replicate or imitate? My personal response is:
The feel of a tool on a surface cannot be matched. Each stroke of the tool requires courage. The reward can be breathtaking or heartbreaking. The human element cannot be replaced.”
Maureen Squires is a working painter/calligrapher living in the Hudson Valley. She approaches her lettering with a painter’s eye, using letterforms to convey meaning or as abstract elements in a painting.
